So, the New Year has come again. Among many holidays, New Year’s Eve gets the best of my emotions. Because this is the event that we celebrate across the globe, this one touches all of our hearts and lives. Every New Year’s Eve, I make certain to scroll through the magnificent photos of people celebrating around the world. Men, women, and children. Friends and families. Different countries. Different languages. Different cultures. Different backgrounds. People from all walks of life. In New Year’s Eve, all these differences hardly matter. Because for one night…one midnight, humanity shares one goal — to celebrate the coming of a New Year.

In awe of this wonderful worldwide celebration, I couldn’t help to wonder…what if humanity can learn to share the same sentiment when it comes to climate change and sustainable development? Like the New Year’s Eve, these are things that affect everyone in our world, something that we all share in common because our very means of survival depends on them. Why do we wait for natural disasters to happen before we collaborate on helping others? Why does it take a pandemic disease and widespread violences that lead to deaths before we start taking humanitarian actions?

In New Year’s Eve, it is humanity’s tradition to celebrate and anticipate the New Year before it officially arrives. I truly hope we can do just the same towards addressing climate change and promoting sustainable development. In the spirit of welcoming the New Year across the world, doesn’t it make sense as well for humanity to share one more common goal (regardless of where we are, what language we speak, and life backgrounds) — to celebrate and cherish our one and only home, Earth?

In this coming year, I look forward to humanity’s brainstorming and collaboration on how we can make our world a better place for our families, friends, children, and ourselves. This can range from doing simple things such as recycling, being mindful of what we eat and what we waste, planting trees, house gardening, or even taking an active role in local or prominent organizations that work tirelessly to achieve such goals every day. I believe we will get there. Not only because we should, but because we can. Happy New Year, World.
